HISTORY. MADE. 🏆
Behind an MVP worthy performance from West Coast Pro Team goalkeeper Stefan Frei, the Seattle Sounders took home the CONCACAF Champions League title on Wednesday. They now qualify for the FIFA Club World Cup later this year.
The Sounders defeated Liga MX powerhouse PUMAS in the final 5-2. During the first leg in Mexico, the sides tied 2-2 before Stef and the Sounders brought the house down in Seattle in the second leg with a commanding 3-0 victory. In the final Frei made two simply outrageous saves at key moments that spurred and inspired his team to victory. The record breaking 68,741 fans cheered the home side on every step of the way.
For his outstanding performance and clutch saves throughout the tournament, Frei was named both Goalkeeper of the tournament and Tournament MVP! Frei registered 4 clean sheets in 8 games and made countless game-changing saves. Frei has been the man in goal for the Sounders the last 9 seasons and is no stranger to stepping up on the biggest stages, having helped the club win 2 MLS Championships.
In the finals Stef wore (and heisted the trophy in) his signature glove, the Spyder X S24F Pro Model. You may have noticed him wearing another glove at times throughout the tournament. Let's just say we've got a fun release to join the rest of the S24F products coming this summer! 👀
The Sounders become the first MLS team to win the modern title, with Liga MX teams taking it home every year since 2008. It was truly a monumental moment for not only the Sounders but the entire league. They will be the first MLS team to ever play for a FIFA Club World Cup.
“It’s everything,” Frei said following the win. “For me, one of the biggest ones is the 2016 (MLS) championship, because it’s the very first one in team history. I said to the guys before the game started that the very first one, there’s only one, and that’s why it’s history.
The Sounders reached the final by winning on aggregate against Club Montagua (Honduras), Club Léon (Mexico) and NYCFC.
